(1473-1543) Copernicus was a Polish astronomer who propounded the theory that the earth makes one revolution around the sun every year and rotates on its axis once a day. This was in opposition to Ptolemy's prevailing belief that the sun revolves around a stationary earth. Copernicus's theories were not accepted by most scientists of his day; Galileo and the German astronomer Johannes Kepler were exceptions.
